Dakota Dalmatians History

Dakota Dalmatians came to be in 1986 with the purchase of a male puppy from Anne Fleming's Madurhason Kennel in Memphis, TN. Prior to that time, John had a large, patch male in his "fireman" days who was his partner in school demonstrations. The Madurhason puppy we purchased was Zack. He eventually became our first champion and earned the title American/Canadian Champion Madurhason's Opening Night, Canine Good Citizen/ Champion of the Americas, an international title. Zack was a multiple group winner and a two time Dalmatian Club of America Award Of Merit recipient. He is, at the time of this writing, the sire of 36 American Champions of record, making him one of the all-time top sires.

After Zack, we went on to finish many more of our own Dalmatians and those belonging to other owners. Currently, we are owners/breeders of more than 50 champion Dals. We also finished several dogs of other breeds including the Borzoi, "Alec"; the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, "Spencer"; the Wire Fox Terriers, "Promise," "Scout," "Bouche," and "Judy."and two German  Wirehaired Pointers, "Hazer," and John's hunting dog and constant companion, "Max."  Kris also has three Whippets , Olivia, Fonda, Ivy and Armani which can be seen on their own Whippet pages.

  This is Max!

Dakota Dalmatians is primarily based on Anne Fleming's Madurhason line, which is made up of Raintree, MGR and Limestone lines with a common background on Count Miguel of Tuckaway. We have co-owned several dogs with Mrs. Fleming and our program has benefited greatly from her influence.

All our dogs are "house pets" as well as show dogs. Therefore, our numbers are limited and our breeding carefully planned. All breeding stock is hearing tested and OFA certified. Positive assets as well as faults are evaluated on each dog chosen to remain in our program. Puppies are raised in the house and are carefully socialized. Each pup is exposed to new people, other dogs and to strange sights, sounds and experiences to help them become happy, stable members of their new families. Our puppies are BAER hearing tested at 6 weeks. They are also temperament tested and their reactions are carefully noted. Continued observations of their personalities and additional experiences help us determine which type of home might suit them best: show, family companion or performance. Those who own a Dakota puppy or dog find that we are always available to answer questions or concerns for as long as they have their Dalmatian. If we don't know the answer, we have a great network with which to find out! We are very proud of the fact that many families return to Dakota for their second and third Dalmatians.

John is a past President of Chicagoland Dalmatian Club and past Show Chairman of their annual specialty show. He has judged sweepstakes for several regional Dalmatian specialties, as well as sweepstakes for other breeds. John was also honored by being invited to be Breeder Judge for the prestigious Top Twenty Event at our National Specialty show, DCA, 2000  In 2001, he was the recipient of the Dog World Award.

Kris was Vice President of CDC and also served as their Specialty Show Chairman. She was Chicagoland Dalmatian Club's Member of the Year, 1995, and has also received the notable Dog World Award for her outstanding service to dogs.

We hope this website will start to familiarize you with our program as well as acquaint you with our favorite breed. Welcome to Dakota!
